The International Maritime Organization (IMO) works to enforce safety and environmental standards in the world’s waters. In this session, our IMO committee will concern itself with several important issues in global seas and oceans. Focuses for the session include sea labor malpractices, the over-exploitation of aquatic resources, and the rising tensions over trading routes specific to the South China Sea. The aquatic portion of the globe is a difficult one to govern, making human rights violations and risks to ecological sustainability especially difficult to control. The issues at hand are of current importance, and we hope that participants will think critically about sustainability, social justice, and effective policy.
