Delegates are expected to adhere to the following code. The members of Carolina International Relations Association (CIRA) and MUNCH delegates must comply with the University of North Carolina’s policies on Non-Discrimination and Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment, and Related Misconduct as well as state and federal laws. Any person(s) found violating these policies and/or laws will be banned from CIRA events and/or will be reported to the appropriate authorities. No person, on the basis of protected status, shall be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to unlawful discrimination, harassment, or retaliation under any University program or activity, including with respect to employment terms and conditions. Such a policy ensures that only relevant factors are considered and that equitable and consistent standards of conduct and performance are applied.
Policy on Non-Discrimination
In accordance with its Policy Statement on Non-Discrimination, it is the policy of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (the “University”) not to discriminate on the basis of an individual’s age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation or veteran status (“protected status”). No person, on the basis of protected status, shall be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to unlawful discrimination, harassment or retaliation under any University program or activity.
Policy on Prohibited Discrimination, Harassment, and Related Misconduct
This Policy prohibits all forms of Discrimination and Harassment based on Protected Status. It expressly, therefore, also prohibits Sexual Violence and Sexual Exploitation, which by definition involve conduct of a sexual nature and are prohibited forms of Sexual or Gender- Based Harassment. This Policy further prohibits Stalking and Interpersonal Violence, which need not be based on an individual’s Protected Status. Finally, this Policy prohibits complicity or knowingly assisting in an act that violates this Policy and Retaliation against an individual because of their good faith participation in the reporting, investigation, or adjudication of violations of this Policy. University students and employees who violate this Policy may face discipline up to and including expulsion or termination.
CIRA Code of Conduct
Anyone at a CIRA event (including MUNCH) or representing CIRA in any way is expected to present themselves in a professional and orderly manner; this includes all staff members (chairs, assistant chairs, crisis directors, staffers). This includes, but is not limited to, treating all persons with respect and dignity, at all times, through appropriate speech and actions. All delegates will be subjected to and are expected to adhere to any and all policies of the University of North Carolina as well as state and federal laws and regulations. Infractions with regards to the code of conduct are determined on a case by case basis by a 2/3 majority vote from the Executive Board of the Carolina International Relations Associations. Violating the code of conduct or engaging in any conduct deemed detrimental to the organization by the executive board can result in expulsion from the Carolina International Relations Association and/or removal of office from any official CIRA role or position.
Further Considerations
All MUNCH delegates and members of CIRA must respect establishments in the Town of Chapel Hill and on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Please note that Chapel Hill is a historic town and many establishments are much smaller than you may be accustomed to. Please be respectful and considerate of businesses and residents of the area by not overcrowding and overwhelming establishments that may not have the capacity for large groups. Please be patient and kind with employees of all facilities and establishments that you interact with. We are honored that we can support small businesses in the area and we do not want to burden them. All incidents of misconduct will be reviewed by Secretariat to assess whether a delegate is eligible to remain a participant in the conference.
Note of Responsibility
Head Delegates and Advisors are responsible for ensuring the health, safety and proper conduct of their delegations. The expected behavior at all MUNCH events is that of a business-friendly environment, and any delegates in violation of this policy will be escorted out of the establishment. Please ensure that all members of your delegation have read, understand, and agree to follow this Code of Conduct. Advisors will be notified of behavior infractions and when possible will be invited to be present in discussions of response of violations.
